Health Department Issues Infant Botulism Warning for Pierce County

The Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department reported a suspected infant botulism case in Pierce County in November 2025 that may be connected to a national baby formula recall. The department announced the case on November 14, 2025.

Infant botulism is a rare but serious illness caused by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. It primarily affects babies under one year old.

The announcement was one of several public health updates issued by the department in recent months. Other notices included:

Marine Beach Warning β€” Late December 2025 A marine beach warning advisory was issued for Thea's Park, Jack Hyde Park, and Jerisich Dock in Tacoma.

Mpox Wastewater Detection β€” September 2025 Clade I mpox was detected in Pierce County wastewater.

Parents and caregivers in Pierce County with infants who use formula are encouraged to contact the Tacoma-Pierce County Health Department at news@tpchd.org or call their child's doctor with questions about the recall.
